Mine‑clearing team destroys anti‑vehicle mine in north‑west Cambodia

ODDAR MEANCHEY, June 17, 2026 (KPT) — A mine‑clearance team from The HALO Trust has destroyed an anti‑vehicle mine in a former minefield in Ta Dev Village, Trapeang Tav Commune, Anlong Veng District, officials said Wednesday.
The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) said the cleared route is used by about 200 residents, mainly for farming, and the operation will improve safety, ease travel and support livelihoods.
HALO Trust reaffirmed its commitment to helping communities free themselves from the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance.
CMAC also briefed diplomats on wider risks following last year’s five‑day border conflict. Assessments found evidence that 155mm artillery shells containing M46 cluster submunitions had been used.
Director‑General Heng Ratana said each shell carried 56 bomblets, many of which may remain unexploded. He warned the devices pose a serious danger, as they can detonate at any time and may be found in trees, rooftops, fields or submerged in water.
Demining teams have already located cluster munitions in several areas and are conducting surveys, installing warning signs and clearing sites to protect communities.
Ratana urged residents to remain vigilant in affected districts, particularly Samrong, Banteay Ampil and Choam Ksant, where unexploded ordnance remains a threat.
The clearance operations are vital to restoring safety and stability in frontier provinces long scarred by conflict.
They added that mine action not only saves lives but also supports economic recovery by opening land for agriculture, infrastructure and community development.
