Cambodia Showcases Global Mine Action Leadership at Ukraine Conference in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan (Oct. 22, 2025) — Cambodia, once among the world’s most heavily mined nations, is now a global leader in mine action and is committed to sharing its expertise to promote peace and stability, Senior Minister Ly Thuch said at the 2025 Ukraine Mine Action Conference in Tokyo.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Thuch thanked Japan for hosting the event and for its longstanding support of Cambodia’s mine clearance efforts. The conference is held under Japan’s presidency of the 22nd Meeting of States Parties to the Ottawa Convention, also known as the Mine Ban Treaty.

“Cambodia understands deeply the pain and suffering caused by landmines,” Thuch said. “We do not want any other country to endure the same tragedy.”

He highlighted Cambodia’s transformation of contaminated land into productive areas for agriculture, education, and reconstruction, and emphasized the country’s broader efforts in capacity building, survivor support, and international cooperation—including technical assistance to Ukraine.

Although Cambodia completed its term as Ottawa Convention president in 2024, Thuch reaffirmed its commitment through peacekeeping deployments and the launch of the Siem Reap-Angkor Action Plan 2025–2029, a new global roadmap for mine action.
