Cambodia at a crossroads: defending sovereignty amid Thai encroachment

PHNOM PENH, March 19, 2026 (KPT) – As Thai military forces continue to encroach on Cambodian territory, building tourist and military infrastructure on sovereign land, Cambodia faces a pressing strategic challenge: how to respond to this ongoing threat
Cambodia is a small nation with limited defense capabilities, and in today’s geopolitical environment smaller countries are often vulnerable to the ambitions of stronger neighbors. Recognizing this vulnerability is not weakness, but the first step toward developing effective solutions.
In the immediate term, Cambodia must strengthen territorial protection and improve military response capacity. Past conflicts offer lessons, and strategies must be reassessed to close defense gaps and ensure readiness against future incursions.
Long-term resilience requires modernization. Investment in advanced defense technologies – including artificial intelligence, drones and domestic military production – is essential. Even a small country can safeguard sovereignty if it possesses capable, modernized forces.
Diplomacy must complement defense. Cambodia should bring its case to the international stage, framing Thailand’s actions as breaches of international law and UN obligations, thereby attracting support from nations committed to peace and justice.

National unity is equally vital. Social cohesion and shared purpose across all regions and communities form the strongest defense against territorial aggression. By fostering solidarity, Cambodia can protect not only its borders but also its cultural heritage and historical legacy.
Cambodia stands at a crossroads. Facing incursions by a powerful neighbor, it cannot afford inaction. By combining military modernization, diplomatic engagement and national unity, the country can assert sovereignty, defend its land and preserve its dignity on the world stage.
