Interior Ministry Warns Political Parties Over Foreign Funding Allegations

PHNOM PENH, June 23, 2026 (KPT) —Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior has warned that political parties receiving foreign funding would be in violation of national law, following media reports alleging external contributions to some groups.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the ministry referred to a report published by The Sunday Guardian on June 21 claiming certain parties had received support from foreign entities and were planning to merge ahead of upcoming elections.
The ministry said that, if confirmed, such actions would contravene Cambodia’s Constitution and the Law on Political Parties, which prohibit parties from accepting funding from foreign governments, organisations, companies or individuals, including entities financed from abroad.
It added that parties must not be subordinate to or controlled by foreign political groups or governments.
Violations may result in financial penalties and could lead to legal action before the Supreme Court seeking dissolution of the party concerned. In serious cases, courts may suspend or dissolve parties found to be in breach.
The ministry urged all political parties to comply fully with the Constitution and the Law on Political Parties, commending those that have conducted activities within the legal framework.
It said adherence to the law contributes to strengthening the rule of law, national development and Cambodia’s multi‑party democratic system, while safeguarding sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.
