EU and ASEAN Reinforce Strategic Partnership at Ministerial Meeting in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 28, 2026 (KPT) — The European Union and ASEAN reaffirmed their Strategic Partnership at the 25th Ministerial Meeting in Brunei on Tuesday, pledging deeper cooperation to address global challenges and strengthen regional stability.
Marking nearly five decades of dialogue relations, ministers underscored their shared commitment to a rules based international order, multilateral cooperation and sustainable development.
They welcomed progress under the EU ASEAN Plan of Action (2023–2027) and reiterated ambitions to elevate ties further.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said the meeting highlighted “why more cooperation and stronger partnerships is the best way forward” as both regions face testing times.
Ministers exchanged views on regional and global security, reaffirming adherence to international law, including the UN Charter and UNCLOS, and stressing the importance of peace, stability and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
They encouraged enhanced maritime cooperation through sharing best practices and coordinated responses.
Talks also focused on economic resilience, green and digital transitions and diversified supply chains.
The EU presented updates on its Global Gateway initiatives, highlighting investments in sustainable infrastructure, clean energy and digital connectivity across Southeast Asia.
Looking ahead to the 50th anniversary of EU ASEAN relations in 2027, both sides voiced support for elevating cooperation, including consideration of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
