Cambodia Caps Fuel Price Rise as Global Oil Surge Hits Domestic Market
PHNOM PENH, April 29, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has moved to cushion households from rising global oil prices, even as domestic fuel costs edged higher at the end of April.
In a joint announcement, the ministries of Economy and Finance, Commerce, and Mines and Energy set retail fuel prices at 5,150 riel ($1.28) per litre for gasoline and 5,650 riel ($1.41) for diesel, reflecting upward pressure from international markets. Officials said the increase followed global benchmarks climbing above $90 per barrel for gasoline and $100 for diesel.

To limit the impact, the government extended subsidies and tax cuts, including a 6.5 cent per litre subsidy, an additional one cent reduction, and zero import duties. The special tax on gasoline has been halved to 15 percent and eliminated for diesel, while VAT has been reduced to 4 percent for gasoline and zero for diesel.
Cambodia is also in talks with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank to prepare fiscal packages aimed at stabilising inflation and transport costs. Officials stressed the measures are designed to protect household spending and maintain economic stability amid volatile energy markets, while ensuring domestic supply remains competitive.
