Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to Join UN Security Council Debate in New York

PHNOM PENH, May 22, 2026 (KPT) — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn will lead Cambodia’s delegation to a high‑level United Nations Security Council debate in New York later this month, the foreign ministry said Friday.
The meeting, scheduled for May 26, will focus on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN‑Centered International System.”
Cambodia’s participation follows an invitation from China, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council in May.
The debate will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party’s Political Bureau.
While in New York, Prak Sokhonn is expected to attend side events and hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts.
The ministry said discussions would center on strengthening ties, advancing cooperation and exchanging views on issues of mutual concern.
The debate comes amid heightened global tensions and ongoing conflicts, with UN members under pressure to reinforce multilateral cooperation and uphold international law.
Prak Sokhonn has represented Cambodia at numerous regional and international forums, including ASEAN and UN meetings, where Phnom Penh has sought to promote dialogue, multilateralism and regional stability.
