PHNOM PENH, May 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is weighing private‑sector investment in a salt processing plant as part of efforts to modernize the industry, improve quality standards and strengthen long‑term competitiveness, officials said Wednesday.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting chaired by Hean Sahib, secretary of state at the Ministry of Economy and Finance and head of the Committee for the Promotion and Development of Salt Production.

Chenla Food Express has submitted plans to establish a processing factory and conduct a broader study on Cambodia’s salt production and consumption potential.

Representatives from tax, customs, industrial policy and private‑sector development agencies joined the talks to examine technical, financial, policy and environmental aspects of the project. Officials said the initiative reflects growing interest in strengthening Cambodia’s domestic salt industry, which remains vital for daily consumption, agriculture, food security and public health.

Participants highlighted the need to modernize production techniques, raise quality and safety standards, improve warehouse and storage systems, and provide stronger support for salt‑producing communities. They also stressed more efficient use of salt field land and greater competitiveness amid changing market conditions and rising industrial demand.

Hean Sahib said private‑sector participation should be encouraged if proposals are practical, transparent and aligned with national priorities. He added that any incentives or approvals must comply with existing laws while considering technical capacity, financing transparency, environmental and social impacts, and cooperation with local producers.
