Cambodia, Japan Expand Cooperation on Economy, Security, and Anti-Scam Efforts

TOKYO, May 28, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with a focus on economic cooperation, regional security, and combating transnational crime under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, officials said Wednesday.

Cambodian Ambassador to Japan Chum Sounry met Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Shimada Tomoaki to review progress in relations since the partnership was elevated in 2023.

Both sides highlighted expanding cooperation in infrastructure, connectivity, trade and investment, security and defense, mine action, humanitarian assistance, and people-to-people exchanges.

Ambassador Sounry welcomed the launch of the Japan-Cambodia Economic Co-Creation Package in 2025 as a key framework for advancing bilateral economic ties.

The two sides also discussed joint efforts to combat online scams and transnational organized crime, with Cambodia reaffirming its commitment to strengthening law enforcement cooperation and regional collaboration.

On regional issues, Cambodia thanked Japan for supporting peaceful efforts related to the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, including ceasefire implementation and humanitarian assistance for displaced persons.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development through stronger bilateral and regional cooperation.
