Cambodia and Romania Discuss ties, Francophonie cooperation in Phnom Penh talks

PHNOM PENH, June 17, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen met Romanian presidential adviser Dacian Julien Cioloș in Phnom Penh on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation within the Francophonie, officials said.

The talks were held at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace, where Samdech Techo welcomed Cioloș and his delegation, expressing hope the visit would help strengthen ties between the two countries and expand collaboration under the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.

Cioloș, a special adviser to Romania’s president, conveyed greetings from the Romanian head of state to Cambodia’s King and Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

He described relations as friendly and said both sides aimed to broaden cooperation. Cioloș also highlighted his candidacy for secretary‑general of the Francophonie, stressing the organisation’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation.

He congratulated Cambodia on hosting the upcoming Francophonie Summit in November, calling it an opportunity for Phnom Penh to play a greater role within the organisation.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked him for the messages and voiced support for stronger cooperation in economic, trade and investment fields, while encouraging practical collaboration among member states.

Romanian officials said their president is expected to attend the summit in Cambodia, accompanied by business representatives.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed the planned visit, noting it would further strengthen bilateral and multilateral engagement.
