NEW YORK, June 25, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has urged the international community to fully implement legal obligations aimed at protecting children in armed conflict, warning of a rise in grave violations against minors in conflict zones.

Speaking at a UN Security Council open debate on children and armed conflict, Cambodia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Keo Chhea, said more than 6,400 children in Cambodia remain displaced as a result of insecurity.

He called for stronger enforcement of international legal frameworks to safeguard children and stressed the importance of maintaining access to education for those affected by displacement.

Keo highlighted Cambodia’s “Sala Camp” initiative, which provides education support for displaced children, and said humanitarian assistance should be tailored to the specific needs of minors in such situations.

He underscored that children require not only food and shelter but also opportunities to learn and develop in safety.

The ambassador added that Cambodia remained committed to working with international partners to ensure children can live free from violence and fear.

He said protecting children in armed conflict was not only a humanitarian obligation but also essential for building lasting peace and resilience in affected communities.

Cambodia’s intervention came as several UN members voiced concern over the growing impact of conflicts on children worldwide, urging stronger collective action.
