Cambodia strongly protests Thailand’s continued border violations, reaffirms commitment to peaceful resolution

Phnom Penh, June 28, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has lodged a formal protest against what it described as Thailand’s continued violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity in Oddar Meanchey province.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thai armed forces carried out forest-clearing operations and installed barbed wire near Boundary Pillar No. 26 between early June and June 23, advancing into Cambodian territory.

Cambodia said the actions breach Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on land boundary demarcation, as well as de-escalation measures agreed at the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee in December 2025. That meeting reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to resume survey and demarcation work through the Joint Boundary Commission.

The government stressed it does not recognize any boundary line or territorial claim unilaterally asserted by Thailand, insisting the reported activities do not affect Cambodia’s legal rights or its internationally recognized border.

Cambodia called on Thailand to halt such actions and honour commitments to de-escalate tensions, strengthen mutual trust and restore peace and stability along the frontier.

Reaffirming its stance, the Royal Government said all boundary disputes with Thailand — and with other neighbours — must be resolved exclusively through peaceful means, in line with international law and existing bilateral agreements. It underscored that international borders must not be altered by force.
