Russian Envoy Urges Cambodia And Thailand To Show Restraint, Support Peaceful Resolution

PHNOM PENH, July 9, 2026 (KPT) — Russia’s ambassador to Cambodia has urged Phnom Penh and Bangkok to exercise maximum restraint and resolve their border dispute through peaceful negotiations, warning against another armed confrontation.
In an interview with Kampuchea Thmey Daily, Ambassador Anatoly Borovik voiced concern over the security situation along the frontier and said both sides must avoid what he described as a third armed clash.
“Cambodia and Thailand have to exercise maximum restraint to prevent another armed clash along the border,” he said.
Borovik said he has been closely monitoring developments since tensions escalated. At the invitation of the Cambodian government, he received briefings from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and visited the border area to assess conditions on the ground.
He stressed that Russia’s position is clear: all disputes, including those between Cambodia and Thailand, should be resolved peacefully through dialogue, negotiations and existing bilateral mechanisms.
The envoy noted both countries are members of ASEAN and said Moscow strongly supports peace, stability and security in the region. He expressed hope ASEAN would maintain unity in backing efforts to resolve the dispute between the two neighbours through peaceful means.
Borovik added that Russia will continue to monitor the situation closely, pointing out that Moscow maintains good relations with both Cambodia and Thailand.
He said Russia hopes the two countries will reach a lasting settlement through negotiation, ensuring long‑term peace and stability along their shared border.
