Cambodia and UNESCO push digital, green skills to future-proof workforce
PHNOM PENH, Jan 28, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is stepping up efforts to modernize its technical and vocational education system as the government and UNESCO deepen cooperation to equip workers with digital and green skills for the future economy.
The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training said the commitment was underscored during a meeting on January 27 between Minister Heng Sour and Flavio Bonetti, UNESCO’s newly appointed representative to Cambodia.

Both sides reaffirmed their goal of strengthening labour capacity through technology-driven training aimed at boosting productivity, efficiency and incomes.
Heng Sour praised past collaboration, citing the Decent Employment for Youth in Cambodia (DEY) programme and the BEEP initiative, which have expanded youth skills and access to learning opportunities.
He said the DEY programme supports the government’s Pentagonal Strategy and labour development plans, which emphasize equipping young people with practical skills and technological know-how to improve job performance and living standards.
Looking ahead, the two parties agreed to prioritize digital transformation of Cambodia’s vocational system by integrating digital competencies and green technology into curricula.
They also pledged continued support for the BEEP programme, which strengthens digital learning centres for out-of-school youth, and discussed expanding the Recognition of Prior Learning system to certify skills of returning migrant workers.
Bonetti commended Cambodia’s vision and reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to building an inclusive workforce prepared for the digital economy and contributing to long-term sustainable development.
