PHNOM PENH, Jan 13, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is studying a landmark plan to acquire Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as part of efforts to modernize its aviation sector and support the country’s fast growing tourism industry, officials said Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol announced in early August, 2025 that national carrier Air Cambodia will purchase 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with options for an additional 10, as part of efforts to upgrade the fleet and strengthen trade ties with the United States. The first deliveries are expected in 2031.

To advance the cooperation, Civil Aviation Minister Mao Havannall led a delegation to Boeing’s headquarters in Seattle earlier this month, where officials reviewed production lines, safety systems and compliance standards. The team also held technical discussions on aircraft performance, safety features, maintenance support and operational planning.

Air Cambodia has now completed its order, reflecting confidence in the aircraft’s safety record, advanced technology and economic efficiency.

Officials said the new fleet will help Cambodia meet rising international passenger demand, currently growing at about 14 percent annually, and support sustainable tourism growth in line with expanding airport infrastructure nationwide.
