PHNOM PENH, Jan 13, 2026 (KPT) – Japan has launched a Business Co Creation Team (BCT) to help restore investor confidence in Cambodia and strengthen economic cooperation following recent border tensions with Thailand, its ambassador said Monday.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Ambassador Ueno Atsushi welcomed the December 27 ceasefire and the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers days later, expressing hope that the truce would hold and tensions continue to ease with support from Japan and other partners.

The BCT, agreed during Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Tokyo last May, brings together 33 officials from eight Cambodian ministries and the Council for the Development of Cambodia. It will serve as a one stop contact point for Japanese companies seeking investment information and support.

Ueno said the initiative responds to strong demand from Japanese businesses for clearer coordination and streamlined mechanisms. Starting January 19, BCT members will undergo training in Japan with JETRO, trading houses and small and medium sized enterprises to better understand investor needs.

He acknowledged the prolonged closure of the Thai border had hurt Cambodia’s investment climate but voiced confidence the BCT would help restore the country’s appeal.

Cambodia’s trade with Japan reached $2.53 billion in 2025, up 17 percent from the previous year.
