NBC, UNDP launch brief on dollarization in export sectors

PHNOM PENH, March 30, 2026 (KPT) – The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC)and the United Nations Development Programme have unveiled a policy brief assessing the impact of dollarization on wage payments in the garment, footwear and travel goods industries.
The report was launched on March 20 at the Institute of Banking Studies in Phnom Penh, coinciding with the 46th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Khmer riel.
The NBC deputy governor Yim Leat praised UNDP’s support, saying the recommendations aim to strengthen the riel’s role in safeguarding macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth.
UNDP resident representative Enrico Gaveglia noted that heavy reliance on foreign aid in the 1990s contributed to dollarization, but stressed Cambodia’s commitment to de‑dollarization. He said UNDP would expand use of the riel in its own operations and encourage other partners to follow suit.
