PHNOM PENH, April 2, 2026 (KPT) – Japanese investors are looking to expand shrimp farming, tilapia production and cashew processing in Cambodia, officials said Thursday, as the two countries deepen economic cooperation and explore new opportunities in high demand sectors.

A delegation from the Japan Cambodia Association (JCA), led by Takahashi Fumiaki, met Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol to discuss investment promotion and bilateral ties.

The Japanese side reported success with a tilapia farm supplying AEON malls and premium restaurants, and said feasibility studies are under way to expand production for export. They also reaffirmed their commitment to continued investment in Cambodia’s cashew industry, which is seeing rising demand in Japan.

Chanthol highlighted Cambodia’s readiness to welcome further Japanese investment, particularly in shrimp farming and other aquatic species. He briefed the delegation on the Cambodia Japan Business Co Creation Team, a new platform for coordinating joint ventures, and pointed to the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as a key gateway for trade.

To sustain momentum, Chanthol announced plans for an upcoming Investment Roadshow Mission to Japan and a “Business Breakfast” program to provide direct dialogue with investors. Fumiaki reiterated the JCA’s resolve to mobilize Japanese investors, while Chanthol pledged full CDC support to facilitate future ventures.
