Expert Urges Strategic Support for Cambodian Products to Build Economic Strength
PHNOM PENH, April 20, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia should move beyond emotionally driven boycott calls and adopt a long term strategy to support domestic products, political analyst Kin Phea said, stressing that sustainable economic strength requires structural backing.
Speaking amid public debate over foreign goods and national resilience, Phea noted that boycott movements often reflect sentiment but cannot succeed without coordinated support. “We should move away from focusing only on boycotts and instead build a movement to support national products,” he said.

His remarks come as the government promotes initiatives such as the “Made in Cambodia” campaign to boost local consumption and reduce reliance on imports. Phea warned that heavy dependence on foreign goods exposes vulnerabilities, while limited availability of competitive domestic alternatives remains a key obstacle.
He urged shared responsibility across government, businesses and consumers — with policy incentives, improved product quality and consumer commitment all essential. Without stronger production capacity and supply chains, he cautioned, “buy local” campaigns risk remaining symbolic.
“Building a strong and independent economy requires long term planning, cooperation and national commitment,” he said. “If we want to be strong, we must first strengthen ourselves.”
