Cambodia’s $60 Million Bassac River Bridge Project Hits 73% Completion
PHNOM PENH, June 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s $60 million Bassac River Bridge project has reached 73 percent completion, marking major progress in one of Phnom Penh’s flagship infrastructure developments aimed at easing traffic congestion and strengthening urban connectivity, officials said Tuesday.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport said construction had advanced steadily since the groundbreaking in February 2024. During a site inspection on June 1, Secretary of State and Project Director Suong Heng led a technical team to review progress and ensure work remained on schedule and in line with engineering standards.

Foundation works and substructures have been completed, while connecting bridge sections are fully finished. The main superstructure stands at 67.3 percent, and road network development at 48.4 percent. Officials confirmed the transport and installation of 96 girders across the river, with concrete connection works now underway.
Shanghai Construction Group, the contractor, was praised for maintaining quality standards. With the rainy season raising river levels, project managers ordered reinforced safety measures, including floating equipment to protect river transport users.
The Bassac River Bridge — the seventh crossing of the Bassac — will span 845.7 meters with a width of 27 meters, plus 804.3 meters of connecting roads. Funded by a concessional loan from China, the bridge is scheduled for completion within 42 months.
Once operational, it is expected to ease pressure on the Monivong Bridge corridor, improve logistics efficiency, and accelerate economic growth in Phnom Penh’s expanding districts. The bridge will link Hun Sen Boulevard, National Road 2, National Road 1 and other key arteries, reinforcing Cambodia’s broader infrastructure modernization drive.
