PHNOM PENH, June 27, 2026 (KPT) — U.S. News & World Report has ranked Cambodia number one worldwide for Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management in 2026, underscoring the country’s progress in environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

The American media company said Cambodia topped the global list ahead of Slovenia in second place and Paraguay in third. Within Southeast Asia, Laos and Myanmar followed Cambodia in the regional rankings.

The assessment considered indicators ranging from natural resource management and biodiversity conservation to carbon emissions, air quality, water resources and sustainable land use. Cambodia scored particularly strongly for its protected area network, which covers about 41 percent of national territory, as well as reforestation initiatives and its low‑carbon development strategy.

The recognition follows another accolade in the 2026 Best Countries rankings, where Cambodia was also placed first globally for Natural Environment, reflecting its biodiversity, extensive protected areas and commitment to sustainable growth.

The ministry said the latest ranking highlights Cambodia’s long‑term efforts to balance economic expansion with environmental protection, a strategy that also supports eco‑tourism.

Tourism arrivals have mirrored this progress. The Ministry of Tourism reported 1.84 million international visitors in the first quarter of 2026, up from 1.58 million in the same period last year. China, Vietnam, Thailand and the United States were among the top source markets. In 2025, Cambodia welcomed 5.57 million visitors, generating US$3.878 billion in revenue.

The Ministry forecast between 5.3 and 6.3 million arrivals in 2026, with eco‑tourism expected to play a growing role in sustaining the sector.
