Cambodia urges calm amid debate over Khmer cultural heritage

PHNOM PENH, March 14, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has appealed for calm after online debate and political remarks in Thailand questioned the promotion of Khmer cultural traditions.
In a statement, the ministry said it had noted recent discussions on social media and comments by Thai political figures regarding traditional attire and cultural representation. Officials stressed that Khmer heritage – both tangible and intangible – is supported by historical and archaeological evidence.
The ministry highlighted the Sbai, a key element of traditional Khmer women’s clothing often worn at weddings and ceremonies. It said the garment plays a central role in the ritual known as Preah Thong Taong Sbai, which is linked to the origins of Khmer civilisation during the Funan period and has been preserved across generations.
Officials described the attire as an integral part of Khmer identity that continues to be respected and maintained today. They urged Cambodians to respond responsibly, uphold national dignity and avoid politicising cultural heritage.
“As a nation with a long-standing civilisation, we must continue to stand firmly on historical truth and cultural heritage inherited from our ancestors,” the statement said, adding that culture should not be used for political gain, social incitement or racial discrimination.
Instead, the ministry called for culture to serve as a bridge for mutual understanding and cooperation. It urged ASEAN cultural and educational institutions to promote accurate historical knowledge and respect for cultural identities.
Cambodia, the statement concluded, remains committed to safeguarding its heritage while strengthening international cultural cooperation and respecting the diversity of Southeast Asia and beyond.
