Cambodia, Japan agree to deepen cooperation in key environmental sectors
PHNOM PENH, Feb 19, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Japan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in climate change action, waste management and biodiversity conservation, officials said Thursday.
The agreement followed an official visit to Japan by Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth and his delegation, during which both sides reported productive discussions across a broad range of environmental priorities.

Officials said the two countries will expand the Joint Crediting Mechanism and biomass projects, while enhancing collaboration on climate change measures within the ASEAN framework. Japan will continue supporting Cambodia’s National Adaptation Plan, particularly in developing early warning systems.
Cooperation will also extend to solid waste management, recycling, waste-to-energy initiatives and public awareness campaigns, as well as exchanges in national park management and environmental governance.
Biodiversity conservation remains central to the partnership, with both sides recognizing natural ecosystems as “natural infrastructure.” Efforts will focus on protecting and restoring resources through nature-based solutions, supporting Cambodia’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
