Analyst says Thailand delaying border talks to serve political agenda

PHNOM PENH, Jan 13, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian analysts said Tuesday that Thailand’s decision to postpone border talks is driven by domestic political considerations and an attempt to prolong what Phnom Penh describes as illegal occupation of Cambodian territory.
The comments followed Thailand’s move to delay meetings of the General Border Committee and Joint Boundary Commission, citing internal political processes ahead of its national election.
Political analyst Khin Phea said the postponement reflected Thailand’s reluctance to resolve disputes while its forces remain in areas claimed by Cambodia.
“Thailand is abusing the ceasefire and previously agreed principles, as well as international law, including the UN Charter and ASEAN Charter,” he said.
Legal expert Sok Sam Oeun echoed the concerns, arguing that resuming talks could force Thailand to withdraw from territory seized during recent clashes.
He said Cambodia should consider diplomatic pressure, UN mechanisms and possible legal action at the International Court of Justice, or even the International Criminal Court if evidence allows.
Cambodia’s foreign ministry has accused Thai forces of conducting a 20 day operation in December across four provinces, occupying villages, checkpoints and cultural sites despite a ceasefire agreed on December 27. Thailand said talks will resume once a new government is formed.
