PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 31, 2025) — Britain and Germany have praised the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained in Thailand, calling the move a positive step that strengthens momentum behind the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire and helps rebuild trust between the two countries.

In separate statements posted on social media, both governments encouraged continued efforts toward de escalation and lasting peace.

German Ambassador to Cambodia Stefan Messerer said the release marked “a progressive step toward a more resilient ceasefire,” adding it created an opportunity to rebuild trust. “Germany remains fully committed to supporting peaceful dialogue and long term stability,” he said.

British Ambassador Dominic Williams also welcomed the return of the soldiers. “I am pleased that Cambodia has today welcomed home its soldiers. This is a positive development,” he said. “The UK continues to encourage Cambodia and Thailand to take further steps to de escalate tensions and build lasting peace.”

Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, said the soldiers were freed at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Prum International Border Crossing in Pailin province after 155 days in Thai custody.

She said the release was carried out under Point 11 of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special General Border Committee meeting, requiring compliance with a 72 hour ceasefire, and was observed by the ASEAN Observer Team and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
