China-Led Talks Seen as Key to Easing Cambodia–Thailand Border Tensions

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 30, 2025) — Analysts say a China-led trilateral meeting has played a crucial role in easing tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, as senior officials from both countries agreed to strengthen a fragile ceasefire, rebuild political trust and pursue long-term stability.
The talks, mediated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, brought together Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow at Fuxian Lake in Yunnan province Dec. 28–29. The meeting followed weeks of armed clashes that displaced nearly 600,000 civilians and left dozens dead.
Political science expert Kin Phea said China’s mediation was significant because it emphasized dialogue over coercion. “China’s role is important, but the key issue is Thailand’s good faith in implementing the agreed principles,” he said. “If one side does not act in good faith, mediation efforts become meaningless.”
Geopolitical analyst Yang Peou described the meeting as a positive step, noting that China’s involvement reinforced earlier efforts by the United States, Malaysia and the European Union.
“Wars do not end through armed clashes,” he said. “They end through dialogue and negotiation, which requires strong commitment to the agreed principles.”
Following the talks, Cambodia and Thailand pledged to consolidate the ceasefire, restore exchanges, and cooperate against shared threats such as transnational crime, including online scams.
Participants said the meeting reflected the “Asian way” of resolving disputes through dialogue, consultation and mutual respect.
Wang Yi said China would continue supporting peace-building and provide humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the conflict.
Prak Sokhonn stressed Cambodia’s desire for peace, stability and a return to normal life for border residents, adding that the government’s priority is ensuring displaced families can safely return home.
