PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Sept.05,2025)— Cambodia and South Africa are exploring a formal trade agreement to boost agricultural exports and deepen economic ties, officials said Thursday during a meeting at the Ministry of Commerce.

South African Ambassador Darkey Ephriam Africa proposed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the exchange of goods, with a focus on exporting South Africa’s agricultural products — including apples, coconuts, pears and blueberries — to the Cambodian market. Cambodian Secretary of State Rath Saravuth welcomed the initiative and suggested organizing joint business forums and trade exhibitions, particularly around rice products, which have drawn interest from South African buyers.

The two sides also discussed mechanisms to expand bilateral trade and investment, including private sector coordination and promotional efforts targeting South African investors. Saravuth urged the ambassador to help raise awareness of Cambodia’s business potential and its network of regional and bilateral free trade agreements.

While trade between Cambodia and South Africa remains modest, both governments have expressed interest in diversifying economic cooperation. Cambodia’s exports to South Africa have traditionally included garments and footwear, while South Africa has exported machinery, chemicals and food products to Cambodia. Officials say agricultural trade could become a new pillar of engagement as both countries seek to strengthen ties across emerging markets.

The meeting marked a renewed diplomatic push to enhance commercial relations and identify new opportunities for collaboration in line with regional integration efforts.
