Rare Coral Spawning Observed in Cambodian Waters, Scientists Say

PHNOM PENH, March 17, 2026 (KPT) — Scientists in Cambodia have recorded a rare coral spawning event in the country’s coastal waters, offering fresh evidence that local reefs remain resilient despite mounting environmental pressures.
The discovery was announced by the ministries of Agriculture and Environment following a scientific expedition earlier this month.
Researchers observed spawning for the third time in the Koh Rong archipelago, and for the first time at Song Saa Island in Preah Sihanouk province and the Koh Sdach archipelago in Koh Kong.
Night dives between March 7 and 9 documented spawning activity and environmental conditions.
The research involved government agencies, conservation partners including Wildlife and Flora International, Marine Conservation Organization and Song Saa Foundation, as well as local diving groups.
Jun Cheng said repeated observations over three years were a positive sign of reef resilience. Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth and Agriculture Minister Dith Tina added that the findings reflected the impact of conservation measures and fisheries protection.
Healthy reefs are vital for sustaining fisheries and supporting coastal livelihoods, officials said, adding that the data will inform long term marine conservation strategies.
