PHNOM PENH, March 20, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has underlined the need for stronger migration governance and regional cooperation during a briefing at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) headquarters.

Ke Sovann, Cambodia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, attended the Asia-Pacific regional briefing on March 17, led by IOM director-general Amy Pope.

Cambodia acknowledged the organisation’s role in responding to evolving migration trends across the region, marked by high labour mobility and cross-border flows.

Cambodia values IOM’s support in strengthening migration governance, promoting safe and regular migration pathways, and protecting vulnerable migrants.

Sovann encouraged the organisation to continue aligning priorities with member states, particularly in addressing emerging challenges such as climate-related displacement.

He also noted financial constraints facing IOM and stressed the importance of predictable and sustainable funding to support its operations.

Cambodia voiced support for efforts to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in resource use.

The Asia-Pacific region experiences some of the world’s highest rates of labour migration, with workers moving for jobs in construction, agriculture, manufacturing and domestic work.

Cambodia itself faces challenges including irregular migration, human trafficking and climate-related displacement, prompting calls for stronger international cooperation.
