Cambodian PM extends Eid greetings amid national reflection

PHNOM PENH, March 21, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his wife on Saturday conveyed Eid al-Fitr greetings to Cambodian Muslims and Muslims worldwide, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a message released by his office, Hun Manet expressed gratitude to Cambodian Muslims for their contributions to peace and stability, and for their longstanding support of the Cambodian People’s Party.
He praised their role in national development, safeguarding territorial integrity, and promoting religious harmony – a legacy restored under former Prime Minister Hun Sen after the Khmer Rouge genocide, which devastated religious communities.
The premier and his wife also extended best wishes to those observing voluntary fasting during the six days of Shawwal, praying for Allah’s peace, mercy and blessings on Muslim communities in Cambodia and abroad.
Cambodia’s Muslim population, known as the Chams, has long been part of the nation’s social and cultural fabric.
After decades of persecution under the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), religious freedoms were gradually restored, with the government emphasizing harmony and inclusion as pillars of national policy.
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, central to Islam’s Five Pillars, are observed in Cambodia not only as spiritual milestones but also as reaffirmations of resilience and unity.
