Phnom Penh’s Old Airport to Open as Public Park for Khmer New Year

PHNOM PENH, April 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia will temporarily open the site of Phnom Penh’s former international airport as a public park during the Khmer New Year holiday, officials announced Monday.
The initiative, overseen by an inter-ministerial working group, follows government guidance and is intended as a trial to explore future uses of the historic site.
The old airport will welcome visitors free of charge from April 11 to 19, between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily. Guests will be able to walk, exercise and join recreational activities while exploring parts of the terminal, control tower and runway.
Authorities said the site, dating back to the 1950s, holds architectural and historical significance for Cambodia’s civil aviation sector. To mark the New Year, traditional decorations and Khmer games have been introduced.
Rules for visitors include designated entry and exit points, maintaining cleanliness and following safety instructions. Alcohol sales, fireworks and explosives will be prohibited.
Parking fees are set at 1,000 riel for motorcycles and 2,000 riel for cars, while bicycles may enter free.
Officials said the temporary opening aims to promote recreation, preserve heritage and encourage public engagement during the holiday.
