Malaria Elimination Target Achieved as PM Marks National Health Milestone

PHNOM PENH, April 25, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has declared it has met its national malaria elimination targets ahead of schedule, with Prime Minister Hun Manet hailing the achievement as a historic milestone in public health.
In a message marking National Malaria Day, Hun Manet said the country had fulfilled all objectives under its 2011–2025 elimination strategy, reporting no new malaria cases since late 2025 and no malaria related deaths since 2018.
He described the progress as the result of coordinated efforts by government institutions, health workers, local authorities and international partners, adding that Cambodia is the first country in the Greater Mekong Subregion to reach its planned targets.
Hun Manet said the next phase would focus on sustaining gains through 2035, preventing re emergence of local transmission and addressing imported cases from endemic countries.
Authorities urged continued vigilance, highlighting the need for surveillance in remote and forested areas.
The prime minister thanked health officials and development partners, saying sustained cooperation would be essential to keep Cambodia malaria free.
