PHNOM PENH, May 16, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense has cautioned the public against relying on unverified social media pages it says are spreading misleading claims about border developments.

In a statement Saturday, the ministry said several Facebook accounts — some allegedly operated from abroad — had used Khmer names and impersonated Cambodian users to post exaggerated and distorted information on border issues.

Officials warned that the pages cited sources “without clear credibility,” creating confusion and undermining public trust, while appearing to seek views, likes and shares for personal gain.

The ministry urged citizens to rely only on official and trustworthy sources, including statements from the Royal Government, national leaders, ministries and relevant institutions.

It stressed that updates on border and defense matters would be released based on “clear and verifiable facts.”

Authorities added that individuals found impersonating others, spreading false information or deliberately causing disorder affecting national security could face legal action.
