Phnom Penh to deploy facial recognition cameras under new security project

PHNOM PENH, June 16, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Interior Ministry has signed an agreement to roll out the Mekong‑Lancang Smart Police Development Project, a programme designed to strengthen public safety in the capital through advanced surveillance and monitoring technology.
The deal, signed June 16, will see the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration receive 487 CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and licence plate detection systems.
A central command centre will also be established to monitor security conditions and coordinate emergency responses in real time.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha said the initiative reflected the government’s determination to modernise law enforcement and safeguard residents and visitors.
“The deployment of this system is a practical step in implementing the Royal Government’s security policy to ensure peace and safety for citizens and tourists,” he said.
You Xiaowen, Secretary‑General of the Mekong‑Lancang Security Cooperation and Law Enforcement Integration Center, pledged continued support, including expanding the surveillance network and providing digital technology training for Cambodian police officers.
The project is intended to strengthen the capacity of Cambodia’s security sector, improve the use of technology in policing and build a more professional force.
The Interior Ministry added it was committed to ensuring effective implementation, with the aim of enhancing national security and developing a technologically advanced police service.
