PHNOM PENH, July 1, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has suspended this year’s Royal Water Festival in the capital to focus on urgent priorities along the tense border with Thailand, including aid for displaced civilians, the government announced Wednesday.

A circular said the three‑day festival – featuring boat races, illuminated floats and moon worship ceremonies – had been scheduled for November 23–25 along the Tonle Sap River in front of the Royal Palace, but will not be held in Phnom Penh.

Authorities said the decision reflects the government’s continued focus on developments along the frontier, where clashes have forced thousands from their homes. Provincial administrations may still organize local celebrations depending on resources and traditions.

The government confirmed the public holiday for civil servants, employees and workers will remain unchanged. Ministries and provincial authorities were instructed to prioritize support for displaced families, wounded soldiers, bereaved military households, active‑duty personnel and veterans.

The Labour Ministry was tasked with facilitating jobs for migrant workers returning from Thailand, while other agencies were ordered to stabilize prices, strengthen supply chains, promote domestic production and improve the investment climate.

Officials were also told to intensify disaster preparedness, citing flood and drought risks and the need to conserve water during the rainy season to mitigate shortages linked to the anticipated El Niño in 2027.

Security agencies were directed to maintain public order under the Safe Village‑Commune‑Sangkat Policy.

The Water Festival is one of Cambodia’s largest cultural events, traditionally drawing millions to Phnom Penh for boat races and riverside festivities.
