The Diplomat: Boonsin’s actions and rhetoric are straining Thailand’s international reputation
The Diplomat, a prominent American media outlet, published an article last weekend analyzing the ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. The report emphasized the severe measures taken by Thailand in the dispute, such as evicting civilians from their homes, building barbed-wire barricades on contested land, and continuing to hold Cambodian soldiers as prisoners of war. According to the article, these actions have the potential to damage Thailand’s image and credibility on the international stage.

Luke Hunt, an experienced Australian journalist known for his coverage of multiple wars, including those in Iraq and Afghanistan, and currently serving as Southeast Asia correspondent for The Diplomat, emphasized that Cambodian civilians in Banteay Meanchey province are being adversely affected by Thai military actions. In particular, the article noted that the construction of barbed-wire barricades and the forced eviction of residents from their homes are causing significant hardship for civilians living in the conflict zone.

Moreover, Thailand continues to detain Cambodian soldiers as prisoners of war, a move that violates the ceasefire agreement of July 28, 2025, and is considered a step that further escalates tensions in the region.

In the same article, Hunt also highlighted the behavior and statements of Second Region Army Commander, Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang. In particular, Boonsin’s threats to seize the Ta Moan Thom and Ta Krabei temples were described as provocative rhetoric that inflames conflict and undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two governments.
Hunt further observed that the Thai government’s reliance on Boonsin in the current border dispute is damaging Thailand’s international reputation. The conflict is not just a bilateral issue between Thailand and Cambodia, it has attracted the attention and mediation efforts of multiple parties, including ASEAN, China, and the United States.
