PHNOM PENH, April 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is exploring a transition to electric rickshaws as part of efforts to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on drivers, with support from the Asian Development Bank, officials said Monday.

The initiative was discussed during an April 3 meeting between Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak and ADB Country Director Yasmin Siddiqi. Talks focused on the effects of global oil and gas price volatility—driven partly by geopolitical tensions—on Cambodia’s economy and vulnerable groups such as tuk-tuk drivers.

“We are exploring ways to support tuk-tuk drivers by reducing their dependence on fuel and encouraging a shift toward electric tuk-tuks,” Rottanak said, noting the government is working closely with ADB to identify practical solutions.

Officials said the proposed transition aims to lower operating costs, stabilize incomes and contribute to Cambodia’s broader push toward green energy and sustainable urban transport. Both sides also discussed mobilizing financing from local banks to support investment in electric mobility and expand access to cleaner technologies.

Authorities said the initiative reflects Cambodia’s growing focus on balancing economic resilience with environmental sustainability, protecting livelihoods while adapting to global energy challenges.
