PHNOM PENH, Mar. 6, 2026 (KPT) — Prime Minister Hun Manet says Cambodia’s Funan Techo Canal is progressing as planned and faces no obstacles.

Speaking to business leaders on Wednesday, Hun Manet said the $1.7 billion project will allow Cambodian exports direct access to maritime routes, reducing reliance on transit through neighbouring countries.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, current work focuses on addressing the impact on residents along the canal route, with compensation and mitigation measures led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in coordination with local authorities.

Once completed, the 180-kilometre canal will link the Mekong River system to the sea, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep provinces.

Designed to handle vessels of up to 3,000 deadweight tonnes, it is expected to cut transport distances, lower shipping costs and boost Cambodia’s trade competitiveness.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held in August 2024, with completion targeted for 2028. Officials say the canal will strengthen Cambodia’s independence in water transport and enhance connectivity with global maritime routes.
