PHNOM PENH, Feb 24, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is considering a proposed $1.2 billion hydropower project by French energy giant EDF as part of its strategy to strengthen energy security and diversify power sources, officials said Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth met EDF executives on February 19 to discuss plans for an 800 megawatt facility. The delegation was led by French embassy chargé d’affaires Marie Buscail and EDF senior vice president Erkki Maillard.

Vissoth welcomed EDF’s interest, calling the project a symbol of strong Cambodia–France cooperation. He said energy has become a national security priority as demand rises with industrial growth and the digital economy.

Cambodia currently meets domestic electricity needs but expects demand to surge. The government is focusing on reducing generation costs, maintaining tariff competitiveness, strengthening grid reliability, and diversifying sources to enhance sovereignty.

EDF pledged adherence to international standards in safety, environmental protection and governance. The project aligns with Cambodia’s goal of reducing reliance on coal, expanding renewables, and lowering electricity costs to boost competitiveness.
