Cambodia Pushes Innovation as Growth Driver, Warns of Digital Threats

PHNOM PENH, Mar. 26, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is accelerating its shift toward an innovation driven economy, positioning science and technology as engines of growth while warning of rising risks from rapid digital transformation, officials said Thursday.

Opening the National Day of Science, Technology and Innovation, Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth said innovation is now a critical foundation across all sectors. “Technology can accelerate development, but without the right strategy it can also widen inequality and introduce new risks,” he cautioned, citing cybercrime, online fraud, job displacement and the digital divide.

The three day event gathered government officials, researchers, businesses and development partners, with more than 200 exhibitions showcasing advances in smart manufacturing, automation and digital solutions.

The innovation is central to Cambodia’s long term plan to diversify its economy, boost productivity and prepare for graduation from Least Developed Country status. The government is calling for greater investment in research and development, stronger public private collaboration, and critical capabilities in digital infrastructure, energy, food systems and healthcare.

Vissoth stressed the importance of “technological sovereignty,” arguing that control over technology is increasingly tied to national security and economic resilience.
