PHNOM PENH, Feb 5, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has appealed for international backing to resolve its border dispute with Thailand peacefully, with Senior Minister Keo Remy briefing visiting US Judge John C. Coughenour on the government’s position and human rights record.

Keo, who heads the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, told the judge that Cambodia remains committed to dialogue and international law, stressing Cambodia has consistently respected the 1904 and 1907 Franco–Siam treaties.

He accused Thai groups of relying on unilateral maps and alleged incursions involving heavy weapons, fighter jets and attacks on civilian villages and heritage sites, including the UNESCO listed Preah Vihear Temple.

The minister said Cambodia would continue to defend its sovereignty but rejected war, calling instead for resolution through dialogue, respect for territorial integrity and adherence to humanitarian conventions.

He also highlighted Cambodia’s abolition of the death penalty, religious tolerance and protection of LGBTQ+ rights as part of its human rights progress.

Judge Coughenour conveyed US support for Cambodia’s restraint, voicing concern over the impact of Thai military actions on civilians and praising Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful settlement and national development.
