PHNOM PENH, Feb 3, 2026 (KPT) – China has voiced strong support for Cambodia’s sweeping crackdown on online fraud, as authorities intensify operations against scam networks in the Kingdom.

Wang Wenbin, China’s ambassador to Cambodia, said Monday that Beijing “strongly supports the efforts of the Royal Government of Cambodia and Cambodian specialised forces in combating online fraud,” expressing confidence the campaign “will continue to make new progress without interruption.”

His remarks followed a major raid in Bavet City, Svay Rieng Province, where Cambodian police detained more than 2,000 foreign nationals in suspected scam compounds.

The operation, carried out Saturday in the Wan Cheng (A7) casino area, involved 22 buildings and 700 officers, National Police Chief Sar Thet said.

Authorities said 2,044 people were taken into custody, including 1,792 Chinese nationals, alongside Vietnamese, Myanmar, Indian, Nepalese and other foreign citizens.

Deputy Interior Ministry spokesperson Touch Sokhak said the crackdown underscored Cambodia’s determination to combat technology-based crime, echoing Senate President Hun Sen’s warning that the country will not serve as a refuge for criminals.

Since January 31, Cambodia has deported 406 foreign nationals linked to illegal entry, unlawful residence, employment and fraud schemes.

Police data show 48 operations in the first nine months of 2025 led to 168 prosecutions and 2,722 deportations.
