Cambodia Says Ceasefire with Thailand Holds as Civilians Return Home
PHNOM PENH, January 30, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia said Thursday a ceasefire with Thailand has held for one month, allowing most displaced civilians to return home, but accused Thai forces of continued violations that undermine efforts to ease tensions.
The Interior Ministry said the truce, which took effect on January 27, has led to a significant improvement in security, though concerns remain over what it described as “dishonest activities” by Thai troops.
Around 530,000 people – about 83 percent of more than 640,000 displaced – have gone back to their homes, while more than 112,000 remain in camps, including nearly 59,000 women and 36,700 children.
Public services in several border provinces remain disrupted, with dozens of schools and health facilities still closed in Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey and Preah Vihear. The ministry said nearly 1,000 houses and other civilian infrastructure have been damaged since December.
Cambodia accused Thai forces of illegal occupation, looting and obstructing civilian returns, saying such actions violate international humanitarian law and the UN Charter.
The ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful resolution through international law and welcomed Prime Minister Hun Manet’s decision to prepare to join the Board of Peace, citing the country’s long standing role in UN peacekeeping.
