Cambodia and Thailand Border Talks End Without Agreement

PHNOM PENH, Jan 29, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Thailand have concluded three days of border talks without reaching agreement, Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence said Thursday.

Spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said discussions under the Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) ended at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province.

The talks involved Cambodia’s 5th Military Region and Thailand’s 1st Army Area, led respectively by Major General Sar Kimpak and Major General Phittayakool Pothisuwan.

The ministry said the two sides had yet to find common ground and agreed to return to their headquarters to continue exchanging documents and negotiations.

Once consensus is reached, a formal signing ceremony and a meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand Military Region Border Committee will be held.

The special RBC session followed a joint statement from the third special meeting of the General Border Committee on December 27, 2025.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing those outcomes while continuing efforts to ease tensions and promote peace, stability and normal conditions along the frontier.

The January 27–29 talks were observed by ASEAN teams from both Cambodia and Thailand, the ministry added.
