Cambodia to clear informal settlements for Sihanoukville port expansion
PHNOM PENH, Jan 19, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has begun moves to clear informal settlements near Sihanoukville Autonomous Port to make way for a deep-water container terminal expansion funded by Japan, the land management ministry said Monday.
In a notice, the ministry informed residents in Village 3, Sangkat 3, Sihanoukville City that the government had approved a three-phase plan running from 2023 to 2030 to develop the new terminal with concessional loans from Tokyo.

The project aims to boost capacity so vessels of up to 160,000 DWT (15,000 TEUs) can dock directly at Sihanoukville and connect to global destinations without depth restrictions.
Officials said a joint working group with the Preah Sihanouk provincial administration has already begun inspecting and identifying residents and structures in the project area. Authorities are engaging with affected households to assess and resolve impacts in order to keep construction on schedule.
The ministry urged residents to cooperate “in a spirit of responsibility” to support national development and economic growth.
