Cambodia, Japan vow deeper parliamentary cooperation under strategic partnership

TOKYO, Jan 13, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Japan have pledged to strengthen parliamentary and legislative cooperation under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, officials said Tuesday.

Cambodia’s ambassador designate to Japan, Chum Sounry, met Masahiro Imamura, former chairman and current advisor of the Japan–Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship League, to discuss ways to deepen bilateral ties. Imamura also serves as an advisor to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

During the talks, Sounry expressed appreciation for Imamura’s long standing role in promoting Cambodia–Japan relations, particularly through people to people exchanges, cultural cooperation and legislative dialogue.

Both sides highlighted parliamentary cooperation as a key pillar of the strategic partnership, stressing its importance in reinforcing trust, expanding collaboration and supporting Cambodia’s peace, stability and socio economic development.

Sounry also conveyed Cambodia’s gratitude for Japan’s continued support over the years. At the end of the meeting, he presented Imamura with a formal letter of appreciation from the Cambodian embassy in Tokyo, recognizing his contributions to bilateral friendship and cooperation.
