Cambodia reports major damage to Preah Vihear Temple after Thai shelling
PHNOM PENH, Jan 12, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts said Tuesday that the Preah Vihear Temple sustained extensive damage during artillery attacks by Thai forces in 2025.
The ministry said the assaults took place in two phases, from July 24–28 and December 7–27, causing destruction to the temple complex, conservation facilities and nearby communities.
During the July attacks, 142 locations within the temple and 42 sites in surrounding areas — including the Keo Sikha Kiri Svara Pagoda and conservation offices — were damaged. Homes, schools and public infrastructure were also hit, forcing nearly 15,000 residents to flee.
The December bombardments caused even greater destruction. Evidence collected on December 28 showed severe damage to major temple structures from Gopura I to Gopura V, including connecting causeways and the northern staircase.
The ministry said repeated shelling and aerial strikes directly targeted the UNESCO World Heritage site, disrupting restoration projects with international partners.
Joint projects with the United States, India and China suffered heavy losses, with restored sections, conservation equipment and architectural structures damaged.
Cambodia has submitted detailed reports to UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee, calling for urgent international support to protect and restore the temple.
Authorities urged respect for international law, including the 1954 Hague Convention, and vowed to continue documentation and coordination with partners to safeguard Preah Vihear.
