Cambodia Urges Thailand to Resume Border Talks as JBC Meeting Postponed
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Jan. 6, 2026) — Cambodia has urged Thailand to resume bilateral border negotiations after Bangkok postponed a special meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), while reaffirming it will not recognize any boundary changes imposed by force.
The State Secretariat of Border Affairs said in a press release that the JBC meeting—originally scheduled for the first week of January in Siem Reap at Cambodia’s request—was delayed by Thailand, citing internal procedures. Cambodia has since sent a diplomatic note requesting the meeting be reconvened in the second or third week of January.

Officials said the proposed talks aim to address alleged activities by Thai military forces that violate Cambodia’s sovereignty, including laying barbed wire, placing containers, erecting flags, digging trenches, destroying civilian homes, and preventing residents from returning to their properties.
Cambodia also called for the resumption of joint survey and demarcation work along sensitive border segments in Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, and Pursat provinces, particularly in areas between key boundary pillars and crossings where temporary markers have yet to be installed.
The government reaffirmed that its border position is grounded in international law, including the principle of uti possidetis juris, as well as Franco-Siamese treaties, historical maps, and bilateral agreements recognized by both countries.
“The Cambodian side will not recognize any alteration of the boundary line resulting from the use of force,” the statement said, adding that Cambodia remains committed to resuming technical demarcation work with Thailand “at the earliest opportunity” to achieve lasting peace along the border.
Authorities urged the public to maintain confidence in the Royal Government and the Cambodian side of the JBC, saying national sovereignty and territorial integrity remain the country’s highest priorities.
