PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Jan. 3, 2026) — Cambodia has rejected recent border actions by Thailand during the ceasefire period and lodged a formal diplomatic protest, saying the moves violate its sovereignty, bilateral agreements and the United Nations Charter.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said Thai authorities placed shipping containers, installed barbed wire, erected national flags and damaged Cambodian civilian houses at several sites — actions Phnom Penh considers breaches of territorial integrity and the spirit of the ceasefire.

He said Cambodia does not recognize any alteration of the border resulting from force, adding that a strong diplomatic note of protest has been submitted to Bangkok.

Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to defending the internationally recognized frontier established by the Franco–Siamese Boundary Commission, citing international law, the principle of uti possidetis juris and relevant treaties, maps and records.

Officials said unilateral placement of containers, wire or flags by Thailand does not constitute legal recognition of the boundary line.

Phnom Penh also reiterated its respect for the Dec. 27 joint statement, under which both sides agreed to mandate the Joint Boundary Commission to continue demarcation in line with existing agreements to achieve lasting peace.

The government urged citizens to trust national leadership and pledged to pursue a lawful, peaceful solution consistent with international law.
