UK and Germany Join Global Powers in Backing Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 28, 2026) — Britain and Germany have welcomed the immediate ceasefire agreement reached on Saturday between Cambodia and Thailand, joining a growing list of global powers backing efforts to restore peace and stability along the two countries’ shared border.

Seema Malhotra MP, the UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, said the renewed ceasefire is welcome news and stressed the importance of continued dialogue and sustained implementation of the agreement, supported by ASEAN, to help create conditions for long-term peace.

Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Johann Wadephul, said the ceasefire gives cause for hope after weeks of violence and described it as an important step toward security and stability, particularly for internally displaced persons. He emphasized that both sides must consistently adhere to the agreement.

Wadephul also praised the role of the ASEAN Presidency and the ASEAN Observation Team, calling their contribution crucial to preventing a resurgence of violence and stressing that continued dialogue remains essential to achieving lasting peace.

Earlier this month, renewed clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces resulted in civilian casualties, displacement and damage to civilian infrastructure, prompting intensified international calls for restraint and a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
